If the interest rate on the currency pair traders bought is higher than the interest rate on the currency they sold, then they will receive the swap fee, this is called a positive swap. If the interest rate of the currency they bought is lower than the interest rate of the currency they sold, they will pay the swap fee; this is known as a negative swap. Swap rate is the difference of interest rate from the two currency when you exchange them in a position. Currency swaps exist due to the difference in the interest rates of the currencies. Depending on the currency pair, swaps can either be negative or positive.
